The Poem

The poem consists of 14 stanzas, each with four lines, following a rhyme scheme of ABAB. The poem is written in the first person, as the speaker addresses a woman who has left him. The speaker uses the metaphor of a key to express his feelings of loss, longing, and hope. The key represents both the woman and the love that they shared, as well as the speaker's identity and creativity. The speaker says that he has returned the key to the woman, but he still keeps a copy of it in his heart. He hopes that one day, she will come back and open the door to their relationship again.

Here is the original poem in Romanian, followed by an English translation:

Îţi înapoiez cheia şi-ţi spun: "Ia-o, e-a ta!" I return the key to you and I say: "Take it, it's yours!" But in my soul I keep a copy. And when night falls and you sleep peacefully, I open with that key your door of light. And I enter your room and I watch you sleeping, and I kiss your cold forehead and I caress your blond hair. And I whisper in your ear words of love, and I say: "Don't leave, stay with me in dream!" But you don't hear me and you don't feel me close, and I leave your room and I close the door behind me. And I return to my house and I put the key back, and I fall asleep thinking of you and of tomorrow. Maybe then when you wake up and you look at the window, you will see a rainbow in the sky and a shooting star. And you will make a wish and you will say: "I want to come back to me the one who gave me the key!" And then I will feel that my heart opens up, and I will run to you with my spare key. And I will say: "Here I am! I came to fulfill your wish! Take my key and open the door for me, to enter your life!"

The Analysis

The poem is a lyrical expression of the speaker's love for the woman who has left him, as well as his hope that she will return. The poem uses several poetic devices, such as metaphor, repetition, imagery, and rhyme, to create a musical and emotional effect.

  • The key is the main metaphor of the poem, symbolizing the speaker's love, identity, and creativity. The key also represents the woman, as she is the one who can unlock the speaker's heart and happiness. The speaker says that he has returned the key to the woman, but he still keeps a copy of it in his soul. This shows that he respects her decision to leave, but he also cannot forget her or let her go completely. He hopes that she will come back and use the key to open the door to their relationship again.

  • The repetition of the phrase "I return the key to you" in the first and last stanzas creates a circular structure, suggesting that the speaker's feelings have not changed over time. He still loves the woman and wants her back. The repetition also emphasizes the importance of the key as a symbol of their bond.

  • The imagery of light and darkness contrasts the speaker's loneliness and despair with his hope and joy. He opens the door of light to enter the woman's room at night, implying that she is his source of illumination and warmth. He also sees a rainbow and a shooting star in the sky, which are signs of hope and beauty. However, he also closes the door behind him and returns to his dark house, indicating that he is still separated from her and living in sorrow.

  • The rhyme scheme of ABAB creates a musical and harmonious effect, reflecting the speaker's poetic talent and his desire for harmony with the woman. The rhyme also adds to the emotional intensity of the poem, as each stanza ends with a strong sound that echoes the speaker's feelings.
