Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a 2016 Hindi musical romantic drama film directed, produced and written by Karan Johar under his banner Dharma Productions. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles, with Fawad Khan, Lisa Haydon and Shah Rukh Khan in supporting roles. The film explores the themes of love, friendship, heartbreak and self-discovery through the lives of four characters: Ayan, Alizeh, Saba and DJ Ali.

The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, who praised the direction, music, cinematography and performances of the cast. Plot Summary

The film begins with the interview of Ayan Sanger, a singer who has newly acquired fame with his non-filmy songs. He tells the story of his experience of love in a flashback. A few years ago, in London, a chance meeting in a disco between Ayan and Alizeh happens and they hook up with each other. They get to know each other and become friends. Later, when they discover their respective partners are cheating on them, they break up with their lovers: Ayan with Lisa D'Souza and Alizeh with "Dr." Faisal Khan, and the two go to Paris to spend a week together. Aayan falls in love with Alizeh but does not tell her because she considers him to be only a "friend". One day, Alizeh stumbles upon DJ Ali, her ex-boyfriend/lover, who wants to reconcile. Partially confused, but still in love with him, Alizeh decides to go with DJ Ali, and so unintentionally stops hanging out with Ayan and they cease communication. A few days later, Alizeh calls and invites Ayan to her wedding with DJ Ali in Lucknow. Ayan is shaken on hearing this but reluctantly agrees to the invitation. At the wedding, he tells Alizeh he loves her but she rejects his feelings causing Ayan to leave the ceremony heartbroken.

Ayan then meets Saba Taliyar Khan, a poetess who is also divorced because of her husband's infidelity. She pursues Ayan despite his reluctance and eventually he gives in to her advances. They start a relationship based on physical intimacy and mutual admiration for each other's work. Ayan also grows as a singer under Saba's influence and becomes successful. However, he still yearns for Alizeh and cannot forget her. He tries to reconnect with her through social media but she does not respond.

One day, he learns that Alizeh is diagnosed with cancer and is in critical condition. He leaves Saba and rushes to meet Alizeh in Vienna where she is undergoing treatment. He finds out that she has separated from DJ Ali as he could not handle her illness and left her alone. Ayan tries to rekindle his romance with Alizeh but she tells him that she has accepted her fate and wants to live her remaining days as a friend rather than a lover. She also tells him that she respects Saba's love for him and asks him not to hurt her.

Ayan reluctantly agrees to be friends with Alizeh but struggles to suppress his feelings for her. He also feels guilty for leaving Saba without an explanation. He decides to invite Saba to Vienna so that he can apologise to her and end their relationship properly. However, Saba sees through his lie and realises that he is still in love with Alizeh. She tells him that she cannot be with someone who does not love her back and breaks up with him.

Ayan returns to Alizeh's bedside where he finds DJ Ali waiting for her as well. He apologises to both of them for his behaviour and tells them that he will always love Alizeh no matter what. He also sings a song for her that he composed for their first anniversary which they never celebrated. Alizeh is moved by his gesture and hugs him. She tells him that he is her best friend and she loves him too. The film ends with Ayan holding Alizeh's hand as she closes her eyes, implying that she dies.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack of the film was composed by Pritam with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The album consists of six songs and one reprise version. The songs are sung by Arijit Singh, Amit Mishra, Shilpa Rao, Jonita Gandhi, Badshah, Nakash Aziz and Pardeep Singh Sran. The album was released on 26 October 2016 by Sony Music India. The songs were well received by the listeners and became chartbusters. The song "Channa Mereya" was especially praised for its soulful melody and lyrics. The song "Bulleya" was also appreciated for its sufi-rock style and vocals.
