Dell Optiplex 780 PCI Serial Port
The Dell Optiplex 780 is a desktop computer that offers versatile mainstream computing and robust remote systems management. It features the Intel Q45 Express chipset with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Pentium Dual Core, or Celeron processors. It also supports up to 16 GB of DDR3 memory and various storage options, including Full Disk Encryption Drive or Solid State Drive.
One of the features of the Dell Optiplex 780 is the PCI serial port, which is a communication interface that allows the computer to connect to peripheral devices such as modems, printers, scanners, or barcode readers. The PCI serial port is located on the back panel of the computer, next to the network connector and the parallel connector. The PCI serial port can operate in two modes: standard or enhanced. The standard mode uses a 16550-compatible UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) that supports data rates up to 115.2 Kbps. The enhanced mode uses an Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) Serial-over-LAN (SOL) feature that allows remote access and control of the computer through a network connection.

To use the PCI serial port, you need to install the appropriate drivers for your operating system. The drivers are available on the Dell website. You also need to configure the BIOS settings to enable or disable the PCI serial port and select the mode of operation. To access the BIOS settings, press F2 during the computer startup. Then, go to the Serial Communication option under the System Configuration menu. You can choose from the following options:
Serial Port Disabled: This option disables the PCI serial port and frees up the IRQ and I/O address resources for other devices.
COM1: This option enables the PCI serial port in standard mode and assigns it to COM1.
COM2: This option enables the PCI serial port in standard mode and assigns it to COM2.
SOL/COM3: This option enables the PCI serial port in enhanced mode and assigns it to COM3.
After selecting the desired option, press Esc and then Save Changes and Exit to apply the changes and restart the computer.
The Dell Optiplex 780 PCI serial port is a useful feature that allows you to connect various devices to your computer and communicate with them. It also provides a secure and convenient way to remotely manage your computer through Intel AMT SOL. However, you need to make sure that you have installed the correct drivers and configured the BIOS settings properly before using it.
